This book aims to be one of the most comprehensive Norwegian verb resources available today—not by providing exhaustive lists of every verb, but by offering something even more valuable: a rich, example-driven guide to the most useful verbs in Norwegian.

The material is thoughtfully structured in the following way:

  • Guidance on essential verbs and modal verbs, including å være (to be), å bli (to become), å måtte (must), å skulle (shall/should), å kunne (can), å ville (will/want), and å burde (ought to), along with clear explanations of their usage.
  • An introduction to reflexive verbs, providing insight into how these forms function in everyday Norwegian.
  • Extensive coverage of key reflexive and non-reflexive verbs, with conjugations in all four forms—though not exhaustive, it includes a substantial selection that supports effective learning.
  • A massive volume of examples: over 1,500 verbs are featured, and the book contains more than 10,000 example sentences—making it arguably the most example-rich resource on the market.
  • Idioms, phrasal verbs, slang, and fixed expressions, presented in context and often accompanied by explanations, to bring out the full flavor of real-language use.

It is worth noting that the examples in this book are not restricted to “school-correct” or politically sanitized sentences. Many of them reflect everyday Norwegian as it is truly spoken and written: sometimes blunt, humorous, or idiomatic. This makes the learning experience more authentic, and helps you to understand and use Norwegian in a living, practical way.

This is a reference and learning tool for all who engage with learning Norwegian—students, independent learners, teachers, or anyone striving for a deeper grasp of the language. Use it step by step, dive into individual verbs, or explore expressions and usage examples as needed.

More than a grammar guide, this book is about language in action—formal and informal, spoken and written, polished and unpolished. With examples ranging from the most common to the more advanced, you will gain both confidence and competence.

Whether you read it daily or reach for it when you want to enrich your expression or check a usage point, I hope this resource becomes a trusted companion throughout your Norwegian learning journey.

Norwegian verbs do not have progressive forms like in English (‘is running’, ‘are running’). Instead, they are conjugated according to tense. In this book, verbs are listed in four forms: infinitive, present, past, and present perfect. After that, you will see the translation of the infinitive form.

All verbs are presented alphabetically.
The book contains two clickable lists of verbs. First, you will find a list of the reflexive verbs. After that comes the main list, which includes all the other verbs in alphabetical order.

In the digital version (PDF/eBook), you can click on any verb in either list and go directly to the section where its example sentences are shown. This way, you can quickly find the verb you are looking for and immediately see how it is used in context.
